The two main free antivirus programs are Avira and avast. They are both very highly spoken of, with perhaps avast being slightly ahead overall.

Avira is very powerful for what it does, but they are honest in describing the things which are not a part of the free version. To get the extra protection of course they offer a more advanced version of Avira.

If you cannot at this time purchase the more advanced paid version, Avira of course still represents outstanding value. Whatever you decide on make sure you take enough backups as a foundation for your online security.
