Avira Antivir is an antivirus program developed by Avira Gmbh, based in Germany.
I have not used this one personally yet, but i wanted to see what they are saying out there on the ‘net.
General Conclusion
Research on the internet was done dec 2010.
The two main free antivirus programs are Avira and avast. They are both very highly spoken of, with perhaps avast being slightly ahead overall.
Avira is very powerful in what it does, but they are up-front describing the things which are not covered in the free version. To get the extra protection of course they offer a more advanced version of Avira.
If you cannot at this time purchase the next level up paid version, Avira of course represents outstanding value. No matter what security software you use please take enough backups as insurance.
What It Does
Basically it handles malware when it arrives on your PC – things like viruses, trojans, etc. It detects the intrusions then removes the danger.
What The Free Version Does Not Do
- It does not make any attempt to combat phishing.
- It does not make any attempt to anticipate an as-yet unknown threat.
- You are not warned when you access a website which is known to be dangerous.
- No rescue disk.
- No extra email guard.
- As you surf the net you will pick up malware – it’s all over the place. This is not scanned until it is actually installed on your machine.
- No firewall.
- Not for a commercial enterprise – home use only.
User Interface
The comments on usability vary. It is in this regard that avast appears ahead of Avira.
A problem with many blogs is the lack of a date of publication or modification (i confess i may have been a bit lax sometimes in that regard). This renders many posts fairly useless because they could be speaking of conditions as they were 5 years ago, which is equivalent to a century on the internet.
Anyway some commentators describe a ‘recently’ enhanced Avira user interface which would make a lot of previous blog posts out-of-date.
