The Control Center
When you have installed the avg free edition you will see its icon, bottom right of your screen on the task bar. Its appearance is similar to the small logo, top left of the image below.
Right-click on the task bar icon, and select ‘Launch AVG Control Center’, and the following screen will display -
.
The 6 large buttons are entitled -
- AVG Resident Shield;
- E-mail Scanner;
- Internal Virus Database;
- Scheduler;
- Shell Extension;
- Update Manager;
and there is another entitled Virus Vault.
To modify the properties of these various components, double click on the relevant button. Alternatively click on the Properties button which is always displayed bottom right.
The bottom panel varies to suit the button (component) highlighted.
AVG Resident Shield
The Shield runs continually and monitors programs and documents for safety. Using the property dialogs (accessed by double clicking the button as mentioned above) you have the choice of scanning all files or just infectable files and selected documents.
E-mail Scanner
The Shield scans incoming and outgoing emails. Via the properties you are given some control over the log file, and you are also able to view it.
Internal Virus Database
The property dialog of this component declares the date and version of the database. You can use the ‘Update’ button in the bottom panel to manually begin the update process over the internet.
Scheduler
This tells us when the next virus scan takes place, also when the next update takes place. In order to modify these times, you can use the button ‘Scheduled Tasks’ in the bottom panel.
Shell Extension
… related to scanning in Windows Explorer. You are given options as to how scanning will operate.
Update Manager
This gives you control over how the updates operate. In order to modify the scheduled time for updating, use the Scheduler above.
You can initiate an update manually using the ‘Update’ button in the bottom panel, or use the ‘Check for Updates’ button in the left hand panel.
Virus Vault
Using the ‘Open’ button in the bottom panel you can inspect the Virus Vault.
The Test Center
There is some overlap with the Control Center, but the Test Center enables you to inspect a record of test (scan) results.
It also provides a wizard for the creation of a Rescue Disk. You are given the option of its location, which may be a floppy disk or CD or another hard drive.
Conclusion
A valuable piece of software provided entirely free of charge or obligation.
Recommended.
